Foreward by Elizabeth Anne Brown

THIS book was written to support Maternity Worldwide in saving lives in childbirth. It is primarily a recipe book, but it follows the pathway of my life and people I have met along the way. Maternity Worldwide is a registered charity with the aim of reducing the huge global toll of maternal death during childbirth. More than 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries. Everyone who contributed a recipe has already donated to Maternity Worldwide and all proceeds from the book will be given to the Charity.

Currently women in the poorest countries in the world have a high chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth. In some parts of Africa this risk is as high as 1 in 7. Maternal death affect hundreds of thousands of families and communities. Millions of children are left motherless each year and globally an estimated 1 million babies die soon after the deaths of their mothers. But we can do something about it because relatively inexpensive treatments and access to obstetric care could save the lives of the great majority of these mothers and babies. Please look at the Maternity World- wide website (www.maternityworldwide.org) and become a regular donor if you are able to.

So my 'recipe for life' is not just a cookbook drawing from family, friends and colleagues in my own life but, with the help of readers, it is also a very practical way of saving the lives of many hundreds and maybe thousands of people in other parts of the world.

In the recipes, I have resisted the temptation to standardise all of the units of measure. Some of the recipes are quite old, from several generations ago, and to have converted them all into modern day units would have meant losing something of their authenticity. For each recipe, I have therefore included first the units pro- vided by the contributor, followed by a conversion into either traditional or metric units as appropriate. A conversion table is also included, so that readers can use whichever units of measure they prefer.

In requesting recipes, I did not specify starter, main course, dessert etc but, inter- estingly, when they came in, there was a good balance between the different types of recipe. There is no division of types of recipe within the text, but I have included sub-divisions within the index, which should make it easier to search.

The recipes have been obtained from family and many different friends. A very wide variety of recipes was received and I have included at least one from everyone. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed.
