The Ethiopia Bike Ride Challenge

Ethiopia Bike Ride Challenge 2006 Success!

Congratulations to all 14 cyclists who all successfully completed the Ethiopia Bike Ride Challenge. The sun was burning hot, there were some gruelling hills, but the scenery was spectacular and the cause was great-to save lives in childbirth.

The plucky fourteen rode 350km from Addis Ababa to Gimbie, where Maternity Worldwide currently runs a maternity unit at Gimbie Hospital. After a weekend spent sampling Ethiopian cuisine and visiting the Mekato (Market) in Addis Ababa, everyone set off into the Ethiopian Mountains on the adventure of a lifetime. It was tough at times but with plenty of stops for photos, snacks, team talks, and later relaxation around the camp fire ensured everyone made it safe and sound.

Arriving in Gimbie proved a very emotional end to the cycle ride. The team was greeted by families lining the street and the whole town seem to have heard about the cycle group. Exhaustion and tiredness were forgotten as everyone stood in Gimbie hospital and realised why they had taken on this challenge.

The next few days were spent in and around Gimbie, visiting local clinics and women's groups, attending ward rounds, or for those who wanted a bit more relaxation, walking, sunbathing and, as if they hadn't had enough - even more cycling!

Everyone who took part had incredible dedication, enthusiasm and an overwhelming spirit. Thank you from everyone at Maternity Worldwide, to you and your sponsors. The money raised will make a real difference in Gimbie, and most importantly will allow more women to give birth safely and for their children to have a good start in life.
